Langfil Mesophilic Heirloom Yogurt Starter Culture

from $15.00

Our Långfil Mesophilic Culture allows you to create the traditional Scandinavian cultured milk known for its remarkable texture and rich, buttery flavor. Popular in Sweden, långfil is a unique variation of filmjölk that has been enjoyed for generations.

This culture ferments comfortably at room temperature using mesophilic bacteria, allowing the milk to slowly develop its signature character. As it cultures, långfil forms its famous long, elastic, ropey texture, creating a beautifully thick fermented milk with a silky consistency once stirred.

The flavor is mild, creamy, and slightly buttery with a gentle tang. Its distinctive texture often surprises those encountering it for the first time. In fact, children sometimes call it “toy yogurt” because of the fun, stretchy strands it forms when poured or scooped.

While the ropey texture may be unfamiliar to those who didn’t grow up with it, it quickly becomes part of the charm. Once stirred, the cultured milk becomes smooth and creamy, making it a delicious and nourishing addition to breakfast or snacks.

Simple, traditional, and wonderfully unique, this culture makes it easy to bring authentic Scandinavian långfil into your kitchen.

To play with your yogurt, all you need is the långfil in a bowl and a spoon. You can use a different utensil, if you want. Dip spoon in as though you expected to get a bite’s worth and lift it up. Tilt slightly, lifting your arm up as high as you can. Bonus points if you roll the spoon. We’ve noted ropes up to 18” with this culture, which is pretty exciting! You can twirl it, ribbon it, or eat it! If you really do want to eat without playing with your food, small spoonfuls. Otherwise, go nuts!

For those of you who think we’re weird to be excited by a toy yogurt, give it a shot. If you think the texture is weird, you can disrupt it by adding some honey or jam to your bowl. Even if you think it’s weird, though, the flavor is well worth working through! This is one of the better yogurts in our opinion, made more so by the fun you can have with it!

CHILD APPROVED!

Our child tester didn’t have a lot to say about this, because too busy fist-to-mouthing long ropes! TWO THUMBS UP!!
