Buttermilk Mesophilic Heirloom Starter Culture

from $15.00

Our Buttermilk Mesophilic Culture makes it easy to create your own thick, creamy cultured buttermilk right at home. With its smooth body and gentle tang, it produces a flavor remarkably close to the classic buttermilk many people know from the grocery store, but fresher and without unnecessary additives.

Cultured at room temperature, this mesophilic culture is simple and forgiving to work with. The finished buttermilk is rich, slightly tart, and wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. It’s perfect for baking fluffy biscuits, tender pancakes, moist cakes, and classic dressings, while also being delicious to sip or blend into smoothies.

Beyond baking, homemade cultured buttermilk adds depth and tenderness to marinades, breads, and savory dishes. With proper care, you can continuously re-culture it by reserving a small portion from one batch to inoculate the next.

Simple, reliable, and endlessly useful, this culture brings the timeless tradition of real cultured buttermilk back into the modern kitchen.

• Mild, pleasant tang similar to store-bought buttermilk

• Easy room-temperature (mesophilic) fermentation

• Smooth texture perfect for baking and cooking

CHILD DISAPPROVED!

We didn’t have time to mix up a tasty treat with this for our child tester, so we just gave her a tiny sample by itself. Her face was hilarious, and she gasped, “this is disgusting! It tastes like rotten milk!” We tasted it to make sure the culture hadn’t failed, and it hadn’t. She did agree that this would make for some lovely pancakes, but asked us not to make her taste it plain again due to its vigorous TWO THUMBS DOWN!! rating.
